Two different gold mines in South Africa are shut down due to worker’s strikes as the nation continues to struggle with civil unrest, Bloomberg reports. The closed mines belong to Anglo Gold Ashanti Ltd, the world’s 3rd largest gold producer and Gold Field’s Ltd. Tensions are still high in wake of the deadly Lonmin Platinum miners’ strike.

In a truly bizarre innovation, a few top Google execs are joining the likes of Ross Perot, James Cameron and other elite investors who are backing the start-up Planetary Resources Inc., a company that plans to use robots to mine for precious metals inside low-orbit asteroids, Bloomberg reports. According to the company, which plans to execute such a mission within a decade, a single metallic asteroid with a 500-meter diameter would contain more than the current total of all the extracted platinum on earth.
